The ball season has been marred by the death of King's College student David Gaynor at the weekend.
St. Patrick's College in Wellington has also made headlines for not allowing a gay student, Malcolm Pimentel, to attend their ball with his former-student partner Keith Labad.
Why do schools even bother with the hassle in 2011?
