Improving New Zealand's dangerous rural state highways is at the heart of a Government funding boost to the tune of $22.5 million.
Associate Transport Minister Julie-Anne Genter announced on Sunday that the NZ Transport Agency will get the additional funding to make low-cost safety improvements such as rumble strips, signage and safety barriers.
Julie-Anne Genter joined Mike Puru and Leah Panapa on Summer Breakfast to discuss the changes.
Asked if $22.5 million is enough, Ms Genter says it's just the beginning.
This [funding boost] really is just early steps. We said what can we do as quickly as possible.
Ms Genter said rumble strips can reduce all crashes by around 25 percent and fatal run-off road crashes by up to 42 percent.
The Government will hold a road safety summit early next year.
