A humpback whale has become the centre of attention in the Bay of Islands after it was found to be entangled with rope.

The Department of Conservation (DoC) were unable to free the whale on Thursday but will undergo another rescue operation on Saturday morning.

It is believed that the rope came from craypot lines, Stuff reports.

Catherine Peters, DoC marine ranger, told RadioLIVE that the whale is able to breathe and swim freely despite its entanglement.

“Its flippers are completely free and moving so that’s a really good sign for us. We’re not seeing that the animal is completely wrapped in the rope,” she said.
