‘We just wanted to make a difference’: Countdown on ditching plastics, feeding pets

On a mission to scrap unnecessary plastics from its stores, Countdown has this week announced it won’t be selling plastic straws.

The chain estimates the change will remove 11.6 million plastic straws from circulation each year.

Earlier this year, the supermarket started pulling single use plastic bags out of checkouts.

Countdown’s General Manager Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Kiri Hannifin, says there are “so many reasons” behind their moves to remove plastics.

 “We’re seeing the immense problem with the proliferation of plastics across our environment,” she told RadioLIVE’s Wendyl Nissen.

We just wanted to make a difference.

“Because [Countdown] is so big, and we’re across the country, we kind of feel we’ve got the opportunity and the responsibility to do more in this space.”

The supermarket chain is part a new initiative calling for donations of much-needed pet food.

The cause is part a new SPCA Community Pet Pantry initiative, which will help SPCA feed animals in need.

SPCA CEO, Andrea Midgen says every day the organisation comes across situations where pets are going hungry.

“Animal owners make a lifelong commitment when they adopt an animal so the thought of not being able to feed their family pet adequately is hugely stressful,” says Ms Midgen.

To celebrate the launch of the Community Pet Pantry in its stores, Countdown has donated more than 2000 tins and pouches of its own brand Baxter’s dog food and Smitten cat food to the SPCA.
