Unenlightened response to leaked M bovis letter - author

Rural Exchange 26/08/2018

Distressed farmers have accused the Ministry for Primary Industries' (MPI) of a "chaotic" response to the Mycoplasma bovis (M bovis) outbreak.

The letter to Primary Industries Minister Damien O'Connor was leaked to Newshub, and paints a shambolic picture of the M bovis response, which farmers are labelling an "absolutely bloody disgrace".

Mid-Canterbury Federated Farmers president and author of the letter Michael Salvesen says the response so far is "not too enlightening".

One of Mr Salvesen's biggest criticisms of the M bovis response is the cost of it, which he believes at face value "seems extortionate".

"I understand [M bovis] is a relatively easy bug to control, and some of the extreme measures that have been taken seem over the top."

MPI acknowledged the response to the outbreak hadn't been swift enough and apologised for any distress caused to farmers.

But it stood by its compensation process, which some farmers have called "complicated, stressful and slow".
