Wellington regional fuel tax ‘categorically ruled out’ – Mayor

The AM Show 24/10/2018

Wellington Mayor Justin Lester has rejected claims that a regional fuel tax is in the works.

“We won’t be asking for a regional fuel tax and Minister Twyford won’t be implementing one,” Mr Lester told The AM Show on Wednesday.

“That has categorically been ruled out.”

The mayor’s comments come just hours after National leader Simon Bridges revealed the city council was in “secret talks” with the Government over a regional fuel tax.

Wellington City Council spokesperson Richard MacLean confirmed to Newshub that it is in early discussions, and that there needs to be serious political input before any action can be made.

He also said other councils in the Wellington region are in talks about introducing a regional fuel tax.

But Mr Lester says the tax has been ruled out, and that Mr Bridges needs to get "better sources".

"I want to clarify very clearly: We are not in conversations about a regional fuel tax in Wellington," he said, in direct opposition to the Wellington City Council spokesperson.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford has denied there have been discussions.
