New Zealand is set to receive an increase in cruise ship visits this summer, the New Zealand Cruise Association says.

The busy summer cruise season has started, with 975 visits from 41 cruise ships expected this year.

Kevin O’Sullivan, New Zealand Cruise Association CEO, says “everybody loves coming to New Zealand.”

The number of cruise ships entering New Zealand has risen by 30 percent, Mr O’Sullivan says.

He says cruise travellers enjoy concerts every night, fancy cuisine, and day spa and beauty treatments on board.

Majestic Princess, Australasia’s newest cruise ship, sails into the South Island this week on its maiden voyage around New Zealand. It will arrive in Auckland next weekend.

The New Zealand Cruise Association says 131 cruise ships are expected to dock in Auckland this season.

But Mr O'Sullivan told RadioLIVE other cruise companies seeking to visit the city are struggling due to poor infrastructure at the port.

"There is already interest from various companies who want to come [to New Zealand] but it is critical on having adequate infrastructure," O'Sullivan said.

Earlier this year, Auckland Chamber of Commerce said revenue of up to $40m was being lost for Auckland businesses because of delays extending Queens Wharf.
