It's been nearly eight decades since Japanese forces launched a devastating surprise attack on Pearl Harbour, a naval base near Hawaii.

A former sailor has recounted his experience aboard the USS West Virginia, which was attacked and sunk on December 7, 1941.

While James Patterson rarely spoke of the event, he committed his memories to tape in 1988.

His grandson Scott Kelly and RadioLIVE's Graeme Hill recount the infamous moment in history through the eyewitness testimony of Mr Patterson.

Listen to the full interview with Scott Kelly above.

Weekend Variety Wireless with Graeme Hill, 8pm - midnight Saturdays and Sundays, on RadioLIVE and streaming live to the Rova app on Android and iPhone.
