Second Thoughts with Eddie Rayner and Mike Chunn

On the 40th anniversary of its release Graeme sits down with Split Enz bassist Mike Chunn and keyboardist Eddie Rayner at his home studio to re-spin 'Second Thoughts', a turning point in the band’s history.

It would prove to be the swan-song for several members including Chunn, their original drummer Paul Crowther and their primary creative force, Phil Judd.

The trio dissect the songs, their production, the tensions and even punch-ups that lead to members being either thrown out or quitting.

The album was produced by Phil Manzanera, and was recorded at Basing Street Studios in London.

It was a hybrid of some new stuff, and Mental Notes aswell

The band was comprised of the following artist’s at the time of ‘Second Thoughts” release;

  • Tim Finn - vocals, piano on “Stranger Than Fiction”

  • Phil Judd - vocals, guitars, mandolin

  • Michael Chunn - bass, piano on “Titus”

  • Noel Crombie - percussion

  • Emlyn Crowther - drums

  • Robert Gillies - saxophone, trumpet

  • Eddie Rayner - keyboards

  • Miles Golding - violin on “Stranger Than Fiction” and “Matinee Idyll”
  • Ian Sharp - cello on “Matinee Idyll”
