Beef prices have fallen over the past quarter, as a result of a decline in US imported beef prices. Rabobank’s latest Beef Quarterly report shows a further downward spiral on beef prices is also expected. It says Japan’s new tariffs on frozen beef imports will create additional headaches for Kiwi exporters.


The wait is over for freshwater anglers, with the trout and salmon fishing season starting today. Thousands of licenses have been sold over the last six weeks and a huge turnout is expected. But with 68 fishing licences to his name, 90 year old Walter Keenan knows a thing or two. His word of advice to trout fishers is blend into the background and don't move when you see a fish otherwise they’ll bolt.


A new apprenticeship is being launched in a bid to rapidly grow people capability in the dairy industry. Federated Farmers and Primary ITO will pilot the programme in selected regions with the target of getting 200 apprentices on to farms. It’s focussed on getting formal training and qualifications, as well as upskilling qualities through on-job training.


Artificial Intelligence is making waves in the wine industry and expecting to replace one form of manual labour. Lincoln Agritech is developing a computerised system to make early-season predictions on the grape yields. It’ll use electronic sensors to count grapes, analyse individual rows and the size of distribution of bunches. It’ll allow the wine growers to know how much wine will end up being produced, as early as possible.


An app to combat Kauri Dieback disease is being described as an environmental game changer. It’ll be focused around community engagement and management of the fungi like disease, with  simple steps to avoid spreading it. Groundtruth director Peter Handford says it’s critical to discover where outbreaks are occurring, as soon as possible.

Are the cows ready for mating or not… that’s the question being asked as wet weather dampens heat detection. Dairy New Zealand says wet conditions, and  poor pasture are impacting body condition scores. This means Cows are displaying less obvious signs they’re on heat and ready to be mated. They say farmers need to be extra vigilant in monitoring, and to increase feed supplement or reduce to once-a-day milking to lower stress levels.


Federated Farmers is hitting back at an animal advocacy group that claims shearing sheep is cruel. PETA has released an anti-wool campaign, using Hollywood celebrities to promote their agenda that sheep are commonly mistreated. But Feds  Meat and Fibre Chair Miles Anderson says our wool industry is globally renowned for its quality, high standards and ethics. He says it’s a mystery why wool is being targeted as it’s also a sustainable and environmentally safe product.


Waikato Regional Council wants to take preemptive action to help transition farms into the Emissions Trading Scheme. It's submitted a proposal to bring the agriculture sector into the Emissions Trading Scheme. The paper suggests offsetting tax cuts, or credits on farm incomes could be used to ease financial pressures.


Fonterra’s Revenue has increased by 12 percent to 19.2 billion dollars it announced this week. That means a final cash payout to farmers of six dollars 62 for the season, including the Farmgate Milk Price a dividend of 40 cents a share. CEO Theo Spierings also received a pay rise of nearly 75 percent, making his annual salary more than eight-million-dollars.


Taupo will be inundated with the duck callers today at the country’s championships. The event’s being held as part of the Sika Show, which not only draws hunters but also waterfowlers. There’s four categories dubbed as the  junior or open meat duck, team duck and open live goose. Organiser Adam Rayner says he hopes a new clinic for novice calling will encourage young people who are relatively new, or want to give it a go.
