SPATnz (which stands for Shellfish Production and Technology New Zealand Limited) is pioneering the natural breeding of New Zealand greenshell mussels at a worldfirst purpose built hatchery in Nelson.
It is a partnership between the government & Sanford and they just won the award for Best Innovation in Agribusiness & Environment (sponsored by Bayer) at the New Zealand Innovation Awards.
"SPATnz has a built a platform of capability that has the potential to move the industry away from a single product, reduces costs and could be more reliable for production and quality.
This innovation has overcome natural breeding challenges and there's a great plan in place!"
The REX team talks to Ted Culley and Rodney Roberts from SPATnz and Sanford who are tackling the age-old challenge of a reliance on growing GreenshellTM mussels from wild mussells.
