The 2020 / 21 cricket season just got hotter with MediaWorks Radio announcing that Simon Doull, Mike Hesson and Rikki Swannell will form its cricket commentary team this summer.
Former coach of the Black Caps, Mike Hesson, is eager to share some thrilling cricket matches with listeners saying:
“The cricket on offer this summer, coupled with the fantastic voices who will be calling it alongside me, should deliver a gripping summer for fans of the Black Caps and White Ferns.
I have first hand experience in the Black Caps environment and combined with my analytical thinking, I’m looking forward to painting a picture for the listener in terms of what the players are going through and competing with as they go about their business.
Rikki Swannell, one of New Zealand’s most experienced sports broadcasters, says:
“I’m just excited to be leaving my house! In all seriousness, we deserve some fun and there's nothing like a summer of cricket to lift the spirits. Magic Talk will bring some fresh thinking and new ideas to cricket coverage across the country, building each match into more than just a one-off game.
We'll get to know our Black Caps and White Ferns on and off the field and have some fun, which is what sport is all about.
In addition, the commentary team for the summer will call on past internationals and other guest commentators, including presenters from MediaWorks entertainment and talk stations. This will include current MagicTalk host and veteran sports broadcaster Peter Williams who will make a return to cricket commentary at the four test matches during the season.
“I’m looking forward to getting back into cricket broadcasting again. It’s been over 20 years but I’ve never lost my love and affection for the game. I broadcast my first cricket match at Lancaster Park 43 years ago and while the game has changed beyond belief, the basic thrill of watching the contest of bowler versus batsman will always remain the essence of the game.
You’ll hear our passion for the sport booming out of your radio or app this summer!
MediaWorks Radio has a three-year broadcasting rights deal with NZC, providing live, free-to-air commentary of all BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS matches in New Zealand, as well as selected content from domestic competitions.
Live, ball-by-ball audio commentary will be available on Magic Talk with 31 frequencies covering the length of the country and on rova, the MediaWorks streaming app.
