The question that Carly Simon fans have been asking since the day You're So Vain was released in 1972 - who really is so vain? - has been confirmed by the singer herself.
Simon is known to have had a string of lovers - one of whom was actor Warren Beatty, who she has confirmed was the subject of verse two.
The famous line goes, "You're so vain / You probably think this song is about you."
When asked if she had told Beatty, she cheekily responded, "Warren thinks the whole thing is about him!"
The actor was even quoted saying in an interview, "Let's be honest. The song is about me." - guess he lives up to his label?
Other verses are said to be referring to two other men - speculations leading to actor Kris Kristofferson and Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger.
In early days singer/songwriter James Taylor was also a potential, however the song refers to a "failed relationship" so this was discredited when the two married that year.
The song was No. 1 in the United States and was reintroduced to the next generation by Janet Jackson who sampled it in a hip-hop version.
