More than two weeks after the devastating earthquakes near Kaikoura, pictures have emerged showing how the monumental force altered the landscape.
the photos, taken by geologist Dr Kate Pedley of the University of Canterbury, show the dramatic changes to land north of Waiau.
She says a three-kilometre wide zone of ruptures has formed. The photos show how sections of land have been pushed up to form walls, which are above human height in many places.
The amount of associated rockfall, landslides and slumps were incredible,” Dr Pedley says.
Residents of Waiau had a tough time after the quakes. They lost water and power, and some were forced out of their homes after they were red-stickered.
