On August 16, 1977 Elvis Presley died in Tennessee and the world lost a legend.
This year marks 40 years since the King of Rock and Roll died.
We asked listeners to share when they found out about his death.
I was living in Honolulu, Hawaii. Elvis had visited the islands just before his death. My neighbour worked for Bank of Hawaii and came home one evening to say she'd handled a cheque written and signed by Elvis. Great excitement! Massive sorrow in the Islands on the notice of his death because Elvis consistently donated to the Arizona Memorial Fund endearing him to so many Mainlanders and Islanders. Christine
I remember what I was doing when Elvis Presley died too. I was working in a local clothing shop and was asked to go up to the Supermarket to buy tea as we had ran out for our afternoon tea and as I entered over the radio the news was announced that Elvis had pass away. Andrea, Hokitika
I was on a boat trip up the Thames on a summer day. I remember my mum crying.
I was browsing at Cook Street Market when over the intercom it was announced that Elvis had died. Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at each other in disbelief. Many pale faces and tears. Linley
