ON THIS DAY: 1964, Walt Disney's 'Mary Poppins' with Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke premiered in LA

It's been 55 years since the original 'Mary Poppins' film was released. Directed by Robert Stevenson and starring Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke, the film premiered on the 27th August, 1964.

It received much critical claim and quickly became a classic, receiving a total of 13 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won five: Best Actress for Andrews, Best Film Editing, Best Original Music Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Original Song for 'Chim Chim Cher-ee'.
