Joni Sledge, one of the singers behind hit song 'We Are Family', has died aged 60.
She formed the group Sister Sledge with her siblings Debbie, Kim and Kathy in 1971.
Their iconic song 'We Are Family' was released in 1979 and became a disco anthem. Joni was found unresponsive at her Phoenix home on Friday, the band's publicist said on Saturday (local time).
"On yesterday, numbness fell upon our family. We welcome your prayers as we weep the loss of our sister, mother, aunt, niece and cousin," the family said in a statement.
While Kathy pursued a solo career and left the group, the other three sisters continued to perform and record together.
The smaller group had plans to perform in Los Angeles next Sunday.
The cause of Joni's death is not yet known.
