A group of senior citizens are flash mobbing in supermarkets

A group of senior citizens are wowing the unsuspecting public by performing flash mob dances in Auckland supermarkets.

The group call themselves the Hunters and Gatherers - and the produce section is their dance floor.

Armed with a plastic axe, a spade and even a fishing rod, they sashay past the rows of fruit and vegetables. The group's average age is 75.

"When we were 50 we probably wouldn't have wanted to have danced like this," dancer Marin Adams told Newshub.

"But when you're older you stop worrying about how you look."

The group of six are part of Seniors' Dance Company, and the routine is the brain child of dance veteran Susan Jordan.

Ms Jordan told Newshub the performance is about two things: Saying no to plastics, and creative aging.

"That you're never too old to perform," she explains.

Some of the performers were reluctant at first, including Renata Dealy.

"I was a bit speechless ... And I wasn't going to do it."

But Ms Dealy says despite a few nerves she's glad she did it.

"It's very exciting actually and I love the idea of especially the children looking at us and going... Wow."

The group took six weeks to rehearse, and they're taking the show into eight central Auckland supermarkets. They've had nothing but positive reactions from shoppers so far.

"It was really cool," one shopper said.

"I think it was bizarre for some people... But I really liked it."

Another called the show "fascinating".

"They just said it was a dance group for older people... And I said this is perfect!"

Susan Jordan says she hopes the routine will bring joy to the public.

"Most of these people probably won't even go into a theatre... Yet they've seen some dance today."

With four more performances to go, seniors dance could be coming to a supermarket near you.

The Hunters and Gatherers will next perform on Thursday April 26.
