NZ speedway legend Ivan Mauger dies, aged 78

Legendary Kiwi motorcycle racer Ivan Mauger has died, aged 78.

Born in Christchurch, Mauger won a record six world speedway titles between 1968-79, and was named NZ Sportsperson of the Year in 1977 and 1979.

He was awarded an MBE in 1976 and an OBE in 1989, and was inducted into the NZ Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. Mauger was also selected by the International Olympic Committee to carry the torch into the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
