Phil Twyford has known for 'a few weeks' that KiwiBuild will fall short

Housing Minister Phil Twyford has admitted that to the Government won't be able to build 1000 KiwiBuild homes by July.

With only 33 KiwiBuild homes complete, it falls well short of the Government's target of having 1000 homes completed by July.

Despite old promises, Mr Twyford says that target will not be met, telling Magic talk that his team came to the conclusion over "the past few weeks".

When questioned by Magic Drive host Ryan Bridge, Mr Twyford emphasised that the Government is still committed to its goal of building affordable housing.

"Ryan, this is a 10-year programme. It's a massive undertaking. And we're absolutely committed to building the 100,000 homes."

Meanwhile, National's housing spokesperson Judith Collins says Mr Twyford sounds like "a man defeated".

"He was either just ignoring the advice he had or he hadn't read it," Ms Collins told Ryan Bridge. "And I'd say it was probably the former."
