Patrick Holmes, CEO of Auckland Coastguard joins Peter Williams in conversation over the need for better funding for coastguard programs.
From December 2018 to March 2019, Coastguard responded to a total of almost 2,000 incidents nationwide. That’s around 16 incidents per day.
What many might not realise is that Coastguard is a charity that provides New Zealand’s primary maritime search and rescue service. It is not a security or military organisation or a government or law enforcement agency.
Patrick Holmes tells Peter, "As a charity we are separate from, but work alongside, other government-run search and rescue services. We work closely with the Police and the Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCCNZ) who coordinate major marine rescues. RCCNZ was involved with the Auckland Islands search yesterday."
