Does New Zealand need Fox News?

Mark Richardson is calling for New Zealand to get its own version of Fox News.

The AM Show sports presenter told his colleagues he believes New Zealand's media needs some balance, as it is too left-wing.

Richardson is an open supporter of the centre-right National Party.

"The majority of New Zealand's media is left-leaning, they sit on the left side of the spectrum. Let's not deny that fact," he said.

"Is that why you're so loud as to make up for it?" his colleague Amanda Gillies replied.

Richardson responded to say it's time for a version of right-leaning channel Fox News to launch in New Zealand.

Gillies replied he was a one man version of Fox News, while acting host Ryan Bridge suggested Richardson should stick to sport.

Fox News launched in the United States in 1996 to cater to a conservative news audience. Critics of the channel have claimed it is biased, while its journalists say they're independent.

Barack Obama openly snubbed the channel in September 2009 in response to Fox commentators' remarks about him and the Fox coverage of his health care proposal.
