Great progress made including agriculture sector in Emission Trading Scheme

News 16/07/2019

The Government has reached a consensus with farming leaders to implement farm-level pricing of climate change emissions from the agriculture sector by 2025.

Green Party Leader and Minister for Climate Change James Shaw joins Magic Talk Drive guest host Brendan Telfer to discuss the announcement.

Brendan begins the interview by asking if farmers have benefited the most from this as it is not due to take any effect for seven more years. The Minister disagrees saying, "the main thing is that the leading companies have said for the first time ever that farm level emissions pricing is part of the solution."

That is new and it is a massive step.

The Government launched a consultation document on how to bring agriculture into the emissions trading scheme, a key part of the Government’s plan to tackle climate change and reduce New Zealand’s emissions.
