LISTEN: Anxiety is the single biggest issue affecting children today, the Life Education Trust CEO has told Magic Talk.
A survey of 2500 primary intermediate schools found anxiety was the biggest issue in New Zealand schools.
Life Education Trust NZ chief executive John O’Connell says 90 per cent of schools surveyed said anxiety was a concern, up from 86 per cent in 2020.
He told Magic Talk more schools each year are asking for teaching support of resilience, stress, anxiety, relationships and identity.
O'Connell says exposure to emotional stress and the uncertainties of COVID-19 have added to the strain on mental health for many young people and families.
Increased concerns of the mental health of young people are also reflected in the recent Youth19 Rangatahi Smart Survey initial findings, where alongside other statistics it was found that emotional and mental health has worsened.
23 percent of young people reported symptoms of depression - an increase of 10 percent since 2012.
