Simone Biles' decision to withdraw from the Olympics has been condemned by Piers Morgan, who said "mental health issues" were an excuse for poor performance.
After a career-low vault performance on Tuesday, Biles pulled out of the women's artistic gymnastics final.
Later, she said that she needed to focus more on her own wellbeing due to mental health concerns.
"We have to protect our body and our mind. It's very unfortunate this has to happen at this stage... it just sucks when you're fighting with your own head.
On Twitter, the controversial British commentator asked if mental health issues are "the go-to excuse for poor performance in elite sport?"
"What a joke. Just admit you did badly, made mistakes, and will strive to do better next time."
"kids need strong role models not this nonsense." Morgan added.
Some commenters on the tweet rebuked Morgan for his lack of compassion, for criticizing Biles for being candid about her struggles.
Don't dismiss mental health as weakness Piers, it's a terrible colour on you.
