Porn literacy key to curbing addiction in teens

Danny and Leah 12/07/2021

LISTEN: The director of a project aimed at curbing pornography consumption by teenagers says we need to navigate through the new landscape of adult sexual material.

Nikki Denholm, project director at The Light Project, told Magic Talk's Danny Watson and Leah Panapa parents can do everything they can to limit or prevent pornographic content from their children, but it can still show up.

"It's easier to find it than it is to avoid porn," she said.

The Light Project has been started to help youth and families positively navigate the new porn landscape in New Zealand.

"It's just building critical thinking - or what we call porn literacy in young people, so we know that if a young person watches porn and they're able to think critically about some of the scenes, the violence and so on, they're less likely to be impacted by it," she told Magic Talk.
