LISTEN: The snap lockdown will likely be extended, an expert who provides COVID-19 modelling information to the Government has told Magic Talk.
All of Aotearoa went into Alert Level 4 lockdown at 11:59pm Tuesday after a community case was discovered in Auckland that afternoon.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Tuesday night that Auckland and Coromandel would be placed under Alert Level 4 restrictions for seven days, while the rest of New Zealand would stay at Alert Level 4 for only three days.
But modeller Rodney Jones says it will be "longer than we hoped" for two days ago.
"People should prepare to be in this for a while, mentally. This is not a quick in and out," he told Peter Williams.
Jones says we should be expecting to be in lockdown for weeks.
"Given the sort of nature of the outbreak, we should be prepared to be in lockdown, like we've seen in the Australian states. Look across the Tasman, you can see what Delta does. Queensland got it done in three weeks, that's the best case scenario," he said.
Jones also stressed that people should be booking to get the vaccine as soon as possible.
"The only way of not dying from COVID is to get the vaccine," he told Magic Talk.
