LISTEN: Small business fresh food retailers are urging the government to reconsider its stance and let them open under Alert Level 4.
Butchers, bakers and greengrocers are considered non-essential, however, small fresh food retailers often have a greater range than many supermarkets, and products for people with food intolerances can be provided better than supermarkets can.
But there is concern that opening them could increase the risk of COVID-19 spreading.
Ashburton butcher Mike Hansen disagrees and says it is just bureaucratic caution.
"I don't think that would happen at the grocers and the butchers.
"We've got lots of processes in place in those little shops that could handle that," he told Magic Talk.
Hansen's views are supported by Federated Farmers national president Andrew Hoggard who is "pleading for common sense."
"We have had over one year to sort this out - yet it is not," Hoggard said.
