BREAKING: Jacinda Ardern says that Cabinet will support the repatriation of New Zealand citizens, permanent residents and their families from Afghanistan.
Hundreds of thousands of Afghans have been forced to flee their homes due to the conflict.
The Taliban terrorist group has captured the Afghanistan capital city Kabul.
Afghan nationals who are in danger will be helped as well, the Prime Minister says.
Chief of Defence Air Marshall Kevin Short said that NZDF personnel will be deployed to Afghanistan for at least one month and estimates that around 40 will be dispatched.
"This is something that we are prepared to do and have the assets," Short said.
The Government has identified 53 Kiwis and 37 Afghan nationals who worked with the NZ Defence Force who are currently stranded in Afghanistan.
"We are doing everything that we can with the information that we have at that time," Ardern said.
"It is not an easy endeavour but we believe we have a responsibility to that small number of people who supported us, to support them."
