LISTEN: Since at least February, National has been calling on the Government to investigate construction of a purpose-built Covid-19 quarantine facility outside of Auckland.
National's COVID-19 Response spokesperson Chris Bishop says it would go a long way in helping safeguard against future lockdowns in our largest city.
He says the cost could be covered by contributions from the Government, private sector, and payments by returning New Zealanders.
Bishop believes using hotels for managed isolation and quarantine has proven problematic, as seen on Thursday when a 23-year-old COVID positive man escaped from an MIQ facility in Auckland and potentially transmitted the virus.
