Vaccination rates must increase before freedom returns - Hipkins

LISTEN: The COVID-19 Response Minister is urging the unvaccinated to get jabbed so everyone can return back to a normal way of life sooner.

Chris Hipkins says while most of the country has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine there are still many who haven't had theirs yet which is slowing down the easing of restrictions.

"Still quite a bit of work to do in Auckland; we've got to get those vaccination rates up," he told Lloyd Burr Live.

Hipkins says it's in "everyone's best interests" to ensure the health system isn't overwhelmed by a surge in COVID-19 cases by people who aren't vaccinated.

"People with non-COVID-related conditions will ultimately suffer from that," he said.

Asked if the government is considering a second Super Saturday event, which saw record numbers of people getting their COVID-19 vaccine, Hipkins said they aren't ruling it out.

"It was a hugely successful day. We do want people to get their second jab.

"We still need a couple of hundred thousand to come forward and have their first doses and we'll be really focusing in on that," Hipkins told Magic Talk.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will outline on Friday what life post-lockdown looks like for Aucklanders and will announce the vaccine target needed to be reached before a decrease in Alert Levels.
