A Kiwi man was shot in the neck while attempting to break into a US home.
Troy George Skinner, 25, began talking to a 14-year-old American girl using Discord, an online voice and text chat service for gamer. The teen attempted to end their communication after three or four months, according to WTKR News.
Skinner then decided to fly to Virginia, US to meet the teen, purchasing duct tape and pepper spray when he arrived.
WTVR CBS 6 News reporter Melissa Hipolit told RadioLIVE that the Kiwi man first rang the doorbell of the teen’s home. When he heard no answer, he went to the back of the house. According to Ms Hipolit, Skinner began to bang on the door and yell at the family inside.
The teen had not invited the NZ man to her home, according to the local sheriff. Skinner's visit was completely unexpected.
The family then heard Skinner attempting to break in with a brick. The mother told him she was calling police and that she was armed with a handgun, WTKR News reports.
"After repeated warning by the mother, Skinner smashed the glass on the door and reached through to unlatch it," a sheriff's office spokesperson said.
"As he reached through the door, the mother shot twice at Skinner with a .22 caliber handgun."
He was shot in the neck and attempted to flee the scene. He was then taken to hospital, where he's in the custody of the Goochland County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies say the investigation into the break-in is ongoing and charges are pending. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is also investigating the incident.
